Abstrakt:

Anyone and everyone can publish on the Internet if they so wish. Not all, though, are qualified or knowledgeable in their chosen subject and some even publish deliberately misleading information. Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and wikis can add to the confusion. Separating fact from fiction, and scrutinising the credentials of an author are now an essential part of any research. One does not have to pay for reliable information and there are many good quality free resources. Being able to quickly recognise these is a key skill that all researchers must acquire. This presentation will look at the steps one can take to assess the quality of resources and their trustworthiness, and the weak and strong features of both priced and free information on the Internet.

O autorovi:

Karen Blakeman has worked in the information profession for over twenty years and has been a freelance consultant since 1989. Her company (RBA Information Services) provides training and consultancy on the use of the Internet, and on accessing and managing information resources. Past and current clients include public and corporate libraries, Business Links, information providers, investment and financial services companies, organisations in the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical companies, trade and research associations, UK government departments. Karen publishes a monthly, electronic newsletter called Tales from the Terminal Room. Her publication 'Search Strategies for the Internet' is in its 6th edition. She is a Fellow of CILIP: The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, a member and Hon Sec. of the UK eInformation User Group (UKeiG), a member of the City Information Group (CIG) and the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP). In 2002 she received the Information World Review Information Professional of the Year award.
